From 1930 to 1987, legend has it, Ches McCartney walked 100,000 miles and preached the Gospel in 49 of this nation's 50 states. Always known as eccentric, he was born in Sigourney, Iowa, sometime between 1892 and 1901. He left for the road for good in 1915 after marrying a Spanish knife thrower, the legend says.

If you traveled this country from one corner to another, you might be surprised how many people say they remember or have heard of the Goat Man. Or you might well not be surprised, so widespread and pervasive is the legend. Could one man, traveling on foot with a herd of goats and a two-ton wagon, possibly have visited every one of the lower 48 states and even Canada and Alaska?

Legend has it that Charles “Ches” McCartney, the Goat Man, did exactly that. One of the most fascinating and colorful pieces of folklore in our American history, is vividly explored in a two-volume video set now available from The Kudzu Collection

“Goat Man: The Life and Times of Ches McCartney” and “Goat Man 2, More Stories of the American Folklore Legend” take you along with the Goat Man from his birth in Iowa just after the turn of the century to his travels across the nation and then to his final days in the small middle Georgia town of Jeffersonville. Through personal interviews, old photographs, and film footage, you’ll learn how the Goat Man lived a life that was rugged yet romantic, noble yet nonconforming, solitary yet celebrated. You’ll hear what happened that got Ches McCartney started on his travels. You’ll be outraged at how some people treated him because he was so different. You’ll marvel at the story of how at the age of 85 he journeyed cross-country to try and capture the heart of a well-known Hollywood actress. But most of all, you’ll be thrilled to witness how one man could have such a lasting impact on so many people across thousands of miles and several generations.

“Goat Man: The Life and Times of Ches McCartney” and “Goat Man 2: More Stories of the American Folklore Legend” deliver you into the heart and mind of a personality that was quintessentially American and the last of his kind. There will never be another Goat Man, but his remarkable story is captured here on video. It is a worthwhile addition to any home, retail, or library video collection.

The “Goat Man” videos and DVD's are available for $19.95 each.
